Space Replay

Space Replay is a hovering object that explores and manipulates transitional public spaces with particular acoustic properties. By constantly recording and replaying the sounds found in spaces such as stairwells, hallways and elevators, the sphere produces a delayed echo of human activity.
The piece responds sonically to people and their surroundings by means of a battery-powered Arduino, an Adafruit Wave Shield hacked to record and playback¹ audio on-the-fly and a small speaker. These were inserted into a latex balloon after being vacuum formed in plastic in the shape of a cone so to enhance the sound coming from the speaker, and protect the balloon from the sharp electronics. A measured amount of helium was added to it in order to be able to lift its content and hover, reaching a neutral buoyant condition.

Inside the sphere
